Let me give you some background on where this video came from:"

Location: Tiananmen Square, China

I was walking with my friends to visit the infamous location of the 1989 Tiananmen Square massacre, and I had my video camera out to fiml the whole thing. We never did find where the tankman photo was taken, though. Sorry about that.

As we were walking past the mauselium, we started to hear the happy birthday song coming from behind up. It's a very American tune, so we were all surprised. Beyond that, it sounded like the ice cream trucks you hear as a kid, so we all turned around to see where it was coming from.

To our horror, this is what we saw...

You might not be able to tell from the video, but you can hear us all talk about it a lot. What you see is a truck spraying pesticides over pedestrians and tourists into the trees alongside the road. Pesticides are bad enough, but look at the cloud that follows the stream and blows on down the street. Apparently our childhood jingles mean "DANGER" in Chinese.

You see the post here is labeled "Chinese Hypocrisy." There's a very good reason for this. We were instructed by our hotel to use little water and to recycle everything because "Beijing cares about sustainability." Because of the upcoming olympics in Beijing, there were signs literally everywhere telling people not to litter and to be concious of thier environment because "Beijing cares about sustainability."

A friend of mine got a photo of the truck-of-death as it rolled by, but no one else was willing to take photos or videos. There were soldiers and police officers everywhere around the square, so I put my camera away for a few minutes after I finished the video. I didn't like the way some of the soldiers were looking at me.

The gem of this story is what happened not three minutes later, though. With the truck still spraying away in the background, I walked to a trashcan to throw away a pepsi bottle. Immediately, a cop and soldier pulled me away from the trash and started yelling at me. In broken English, they shouted that I should never throw plastic away and should recycle instead (I didn't see the recycling bin behind the trash can) because Beijing and the Chinese care about protecting the environment.

No, I was not ballsy enough to point out the flagrant hypocrisy of saying that while a truck sprayed mutigens and carcinogens on the public behind them.

Advertising Genius

I'm doing a project evaluating Nestle's effectiveness in the Asian marketplace (specifically in Tokyo, Beijing, and Shanghai). It's an interesting project to do since we have a group of 4 people and we're limited to 10 pages in our report. Here's what I think is the most brilliant marketing idea Nestle has had thus far:
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_52ZM_VGhAbI/Ria1X1EoN6I/AAAAAAAAAA4/SUS0uIFSY3c/s400/Nestle+Ticket+Ad.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5054927052758071202" />
This advertisement appears on the back side of the ticket to tour the Forbidden City in Beijing. Think of it this way: advertising on the entry pass to one of the biggest cultural landmarks in China. Locals frequently visit the site, and it's one of the major tourist attractions in China as well. Can you think of a better way to get your brand name out there among the local and touring population?

This tops even the neon billboards Nestle had in Shanghai. It's subtle, but recognized. Even if you're not immediately enticed to buy a Nestle ice cream bar you'll probably be putting their advertisement in a scrapbook somewhere when you get home. Not even Coca-Cola or Pepsi can claim that their ads from foreign markets are found framed, laminated, or otherwise displayed in American households. I can think of at least thirty companies that would be jealous of Nestle's positioning in Beijing if they were only aware of it. I wonder how many other cultural icons are used for convenient advertising elsewhere in the world ... it's really a great idea.

Too bad I didn't think of it first.

Rubberball

As some of you might know, my grad school exit project involves studying rubberball baseball in Japan. Rubberball is played with the same rules as regular baseball, but with slightly different equipment and smaller fields. The balls are made out of rubber, so you can't throw or hit them nearly as far as the typical American hardball. This helps facilitate the creation of multiple fields in a country where land is expensive and you have to cram as much as you can into as little space as possible.

While I was in Tokyo, I spent all of my free time either visiting sports shops to compare equipment, visiting batting cages to test equipment and interview players, or looking for sports fields to watch games. It was incredibly fun, but is also the reason I didn't get to see as much as Japan as I had wanted to. Here's a video from one such game that I watched while I was in the area:

This video clip shows several important things about rubberball in Japan. First: the player hit the ball far enough that it flew into a neighboring field. The other game had to pause so our game's players could field the ball and finish the play. I also have a video of the neighboring game hitting a ball into our field, too. To maximize land use, the baseball fields come in sets of four and are extremely close together.

Second: although the player hit the ball far enough to have made a home run, he was unable to run past third base. You can hear one of my colleagues jokingly suggest giving him a cigarette after the play at the end of the clip. This particular league is comprised of moderately competitive individuals who played in high school or other youth leagues. While they're in infinitely better shape than I am, they don't train nearly as hard as some of the higher leagues and big plays like this usually result in one or more player collapsing on base. Unlike American sports where he'd probably be yelled at for not trying harder, though, you can hear everyone laughing it off in the background. If I remember correctly, he made it home shortly after this play.

I'll put more videos up online later, but I'd really appreciate someone pointing me to a better program to do my video editing. Windows Movie Maker just doesn't offer the quality I'm looking for...

ただいま！

Actually, I've been back in the states for over a week now. I flew in yesterday afternoon on what was about a two hour flight. I slept for the first half of the flight, so it was just that much quicker for me. Then we made our way to the New Asia hotel near the Bund in Shanghai. As a matter of fact, you can see the beautiful skyline from my room.

The rooms here are slightly larger than the ones we had in Beijing, but about the same quality. We also no longer have an opera hall in the lobby downstairs. Too bad for me, no more Chinese opera.

We took some time our first evening in town to explore the area. A bunch of us walked to the Bund and were amazed with how the town looked. (For those of you who are wondering, the Bund is the riverwalk in Shanghai. There are food carts, street vendors, and vending machines. It's a lot like the waterfront in Portland only without the parks.) We decided that Friday afternoon, when we have more time, we're all going to take a river tour. There are several boats that take you up and down the river to see the different buildings and it should be an experience.

Today was a tour of the sourcing company for Target. I was pretty bored for a majority of the tour, but my boredom was my own fault. I let myself be at the back of the line for the office tour and didn't even realize we were on a tour with a tourguide until the very end. Most of us in the back didn't hear a word she said about the office. The presentations were also very supply-chain specific and, because I'm interested more in marketing, I didn't pay much attention. I did find it somehow ironic that so many people work for Target in China (they design and make the actual products) but are unable to buy anything from Target. There are no Target stores in China and apparently you can't purchase things from Target.com for shipping in China. How strange is that?

After the office was a tour of the Target warehouse and the port everything is shipped through. I've never seen so many shipping containers in my life! And yes, Ryan, the longest container ship is a quarter-mile long. I double checked with professionals today. So :-P.

Now it's time to find some dinner and relax before my 12-hour factory visit tomorrow. Have a great evening!

Shanghai

I'm safely in Shanghai. It was phenomenal and I got a lot out of the trip. Click "Read More..." to hear about my experience.

We left at about 8:30 in the morning to get there by 9 when the trade show opened. There were six of us in our little expedition: Kusko, Stephanie, Will, Brady, Kathy, and myself. Here's a picture of everyone who went (I took the picture, so you can't see me):

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_52ZM_VGhAbI/RfuHxkCZ4tI/AAAAAAAAAAM/oPW0Z49tVkc/s320/PC010062.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5042773493328503506" />

The show ended up being free, rather than costing us 20RMB as we had expected. I got all the brochures and fliers and such and then we divided up to look at the individual booths. It was the winter trade show, so there were a lot of booths for skiing and snowboarding equipment. I'm actually inspired now, and I hope to learn to snowboard at some point in time when I get back to the US.

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_52ZM_VGhAbI/RfuIW0CZ4uI/AAAAAAAAAAU/GTv9TkEVAuo/s320/PC010063.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5042774133278630626" />

The trade show was apparently very popular. There were TONS of people there looking at the various displays. I was a little afraid that we wouldn't actually get to talk to anyone; the sheer volume of people in the exhibition hall was restrictive, and I don't speak a word of Chinese. My fears were put to rest quickly, though, when I realized that I felt very in-my-element at the trade show and started walking through the different booths.

There was a lot of creative energy in the room, but some of the displays were very lacking. There were quite a few low-budget box setups: White walls with hanging product and a table in the center with catalogues. At the same time, there were several other wildly creative booths. One had huge stone pillars made entirely out of styrofoam. Another had a mechanical yak (the company was Black Yak, so it couldn't just be a mechanical bull). Still another company had an actual runway and was doing a fashion show to display its products.

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_52ZM_VGhAbI/RfuJq0CZ4vI/AAAAAAAAAAc/0VE7qJ3pXL8/s320/PC010064.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5042775576387642098" />

My favorite booth was in the climbing area. Right next to the Petzl display was a full-sized bouldering wall set up for the ISPO Bouldering Cup. I really wanted to get up on the wall, but the tournament was already set and I couldn't sign up for it. I thought it would be fun for the random American to come in and school everyone while wearing khakis and a button-down shirt.

There were a few booths that I was disappointed with, though, but not because of the content. You have to realize that this entire trip is in Asia and the trade show is in China. Naturally, everyone in the show spoke Chinese. I was hoping that because it was an international show that there would have been more English speakers. Nope. In a couple of the booths that I had been waiting to see I was avoided like a leper by the sales representatives. They spoke no English and were intimidated by me and what I seemed to already know about their products.

All in all, though, I had an incredibly positive experience. I wish I had more pictures to share with you, but my camera batteries died shortly after I got to the show. The people I was with will more than likely have their own photos that I will definitely add later for you. If anyone knows of a similar show in the Portland area, please be sure to let me know about it so I can go hang out there and meet more people in the field.

Videos

I have been taking several videos of my trip to Asia. Here is the first of what will be many segments on the trip. This is just a quick walkthrough of our hotel room in Tokyo. I have taken 3 hours of film thus far and have two more tapes to work with. It's a free day for the trip schedule, so I took a trip out of Shinagawa to a big sports complex. I can't remember the name of the area, but it was next to the 1964 Olympic stadium. Yes, I have video of the stadium, too.

Originally, I had planned to meet some representatives at Waseda University. The downside of that is that we had to cancel the meeting. Waseda was involved in some very big front-page news this morning and is very busy trying to avoid the massively negative PR. Their representative still met us at the hotel as promised, but we could quickly tell he only came to save face for Waseda.

Greg quickly spun together an offer to cancel the meeting and the Waseda rep was incredibly thankful. I felt sorry for him and the situation he was in, but I was also impressed that he still made the original meeting. Ironically, the only reason we didn't cancel the meeting earlier was to save face on our part. After we got here, we realized Waseda didn't even use the equipment DeMarini makes and that all the equipment we had was for a different form of baseball altogether. We wanted to cancel the meeting on that part, but held it to maintain the relationship between Waseda and Portland State. Now I guess it's the best for both because there was no way we'd have gotten any information today. One of the coaches is in Okinawa and the others are all so busy trying to figure out what's going on that we could only have met with the student managers in the first place.

So instead we made our way to the fields and then ventured to the batting center (batting cages) nearby to interview some people. Luckily for us, there were some English-speakers there practicing rubberball. They're all in the rec league and set us up with some information about their team. They even tested our bat for us and were willing to go out and buy it because they liked the feel and performance so much. Score one for us! One of the guys does the voice of the announcer on Iron Chef, by the way. He was a very interesting character and tried to impress us by shouting catch lines from the show that, ironically, none of us have ever seen.

Right now I'm on my way back up to my room to start packing because we leave tomorrow and I want to be ready. I'm going to try to go out with some people later tonight and will try to keep you up to date on what happens there.

Keep in mind that I might not have frequent access to internet next week. Because I only have a few minutes, I'll just give you a quick summary of my week. Everything from plane sickness to washing my clothes in the sink.

The plane flight was fine. It was a little long, but all-in-all a great ride up until the last hour or so. We had so much turbulence that I got myself really sick. That, and I was hungry and tired from the 9 hour flight and had a headache from watching movies on the tiny little screen on the back of the seat in front of me. I managed to hold it together, though, and didn't throw up. You'd all be proud of me.

I decided not to stay up too late that night and just toured around the hotel for a bit before going to bed at 10 or so that night (to do a time conversion to PDX time, add 7 hours and drop a day. 10PM Monday night would be 5AM Monday morning in Portland).

Lectures were pretty good the following day. The first was conducted entirely through interpretors, but I thought it was the best we've had thus far. I ate lunch at McDonalds just for the experience (and Dad, the menu is pretty much the same, but they have a shrimp filet here). After the second lecture I got to explore the Tokyo commuter rail line and the subway to find my way over to Shinjuku for a meeting with the marketing manager of Wilson Team Sports. For those of you who want to look at a map, I'm staying at the Takanawa Prince Hotel in Shinagawa (which is in Tokyo).

We went out to a fancy restaurant after that and, like the rest of this week, I avoided pretty much all the fish and stuck with the rice and vegetables. I'm already losing weight because I don't eat pretty much anything that's served here in Japan. I think it will be the same way in China.

On Wednesday we had a presentation by a Nike representative. I was somewhat less than impressed, but won't go into why here. If you're really interested, find me later and ask.

Then I went to the area around the Tokyo dome to look at sporting goods shops for my exit project (For DeMarini, the Wilson subsidiary that makes the really high-quality bats). We looked at a couple of pro shops, then saw a neat looking roller coaster. It cost ￥１０００ to ride, but the 40-story drop was worth it.

Thursday took us to the Asahi brewery for a pre-packaged plant tour. It was OK and was followed by free samples for everyone. I wouldn't recommend their "super-dry" beer, but the stout was pretty good.

After that we took another trip through town for the exit project. This time was a trip to a batting cage only a few train stations away from the hotel. We hit a lot (the DeMarini bats are incredible, by the way) and got 3 good interviews in with Japanese hitters.

Today was a tour of the Nissan factory. Unfortunately, there were no free samples. The tour itself was nice. It was great to see a different factory than the one for Freightliner that we toured a while ago. Japanese manufacturing is very different than American manufacturing.

I went shopping in Harajuku after that, trying to look for small gifts for everyone at home. Sorry guys; I didn't find anything useful. Even the rip-off plastic jewelry was about $10 a piece.

I came back to the hotel and ate some more rice (look at me, I'm healthy!) before doing my laundry in the bathroom sink. I know that sounds kind of gross, but it costs $3 to wash 1 shirt at the hotel and there are no laundromats near here. I'd rather wash my socks in the sink than pay what my roommate did to do his laundry: 3 t-shirts, 3 pairs underwear, 4 pairs socks = $30. Still think I'm crazy?

Tomorrow I have a meeting at Waseda University. I get to talk to the baseball teams before they start their practice/games later that day. I hope to get a lot of information before heading to more pro shops and possible the sports museum afterwards. Then I need to pack and get ready to go.

We have an 8am meeting on Sunday with one of the adult rec baseball leagues before they start a tournament at 9. We plan to stay for the first hour to chat with players and coaches before taking the hour and a half train ride back here. Downside is, we have to check out of our room by noon and catch our bus to the airport at 2:30. It should be a very difficult but fun morning to plan through all the logistics. With me luck!

じゃね！

日産

Today was our tour of the Nissan plant. It was great, but unlike the Asahi brewery there were no free samples waiting when we finished. Sad times for us.

My schedule's been pretty busy thus far in Tokyo, so I haven't had the time to give you a real update on the week. I've been getting up at around 7 every day and hitting bed at around 12. I get my tickets on Saturday and it will be up to me to force my nervousness aside so I don't lose anything between now and take off. I should probably start packing, too. We'll see how far that initiative goes (I tend to put off packing until a day or so before a big trip because I'm in denial that I'm actually leaving).

Now it's time to study for finals and not stress myself out too much between the trip and exams. I'm still not sure how often I'll actually be able to update this during the trip but I will at least try to keep a log so I can give you updates about what's going on after the fact.

Camcorder

I plan/hope to film most of my trip abroad. All I have is loan money with high interest rates to replace my denim wardrobe (For those of you who might be unaware, blue jeans are not appropriate attire for business meetings; unfortunately, that's all I own!).

Author's Note

It has come to my attention that the comment feature on this page is malfunctioning. Unfortunately, that meant I had to once again visit Walgreens and suffer from the sub-par service they seem to always exhibit at that one particular location (Murray and Scholls in Beaverton for all of you who'd like to avoid the multiple fiascoes I've endured there). I had to get another set of passport photos made up so I could turn one in with my paperwork. Yes, I already had a spare from when I originally applied for my passport, but the lady who took that application stapled it. I don't want to risk having everything rejected because of staple holes.

I'm almost in Asia!

Even closer now

The trip is so close now I can almost taste it. Well, feel it. OK, both of those statements are kind of strange (you can't taste or feel a trip in the first place). But I'm really anxious for the trip anyway. It's exciting to know that inside of two whole months I will be getting on a plane for a multiple hour flight over the Pacific Ocean.

Things seem even more real now that our director has finally asked for our Passports so he can get our Chinese visas. It means that, at this point, the trip will happen and I'll really be going to Asia. Just think, a real trip abroad for the FIRST TIME EVER! Wouldn't you be excited?

Does anyone have any suggestions for locations to visit while I'm there? I'll be travelling to Tokyo, Beijing, and Shanghai. I hope everyone else had just as much fun ringing in the new year as I did; it was a blast here in Eugene. Since it's now January, and a new year, I decided some resolutions were in order. The following is a highly abridged draft version of my resolutions for 2007, in no particular order:

Health-related:

No soda (excluding root beer) until March.

At least two well-balanced meals per day.

Drink more juice.

Eat out no more than 4 meals per week.

Climb at least 30 minutes 3 times each week.

Other:

Write creatively at least 30 minutes each day.

Read at least 2 books each month ("recreational reading").

Keep my personal living space completely clean (needing to be re-cleaned less than once a month).

Update at least one of my blogs at least every other day.

There are most likely others, but they are either private, no currently on my mind, or I just don't care enough to divulge them at this time. I hope the rest of you have some good resolutions for the year. Let's cross our fingers that we can all keep those resolutions as long as possible.

It's been over a week since I've posted, and I apologize for that. It's just over two months now until I leave for Asia and I am really excited. Christmas has come and gone, and I'm awaiting the rapidly approaching New Year.

Good luck to everyone in 2007. One of my first resolutions for the new year is to write something at least once per day. Whether that will be this blog, my writing blog, or an entry in some other media I do not yet know. In any case, stay safe through the rest of 2006 and I'll see you next year!

December

Only 5 days left until Christmas. Can you believe I have all of my shopping done? I usually end up waiting until there are only a few days left, but this year I was on the ball. I'm spending time in Eugene with my girlfriend, and did all of my shopping when I got here. It was very convenient because of the way Eugene works. For some reason, no one here does anything before 10:45 in the morning. So I just hit the stores before then, skipped all the traffic and the checkout lines, and then got back to the apartment to do other things (laundry, gift wrapping, writing, etc.).

For Christmas, I got Annie a membership to the local rock climbing gym. I gave it to her a while ago so she could start going after work. Then I bought one for myself after I got to town. We've gone for at least an hour a day for the last three days straight! We aren't going tonight, though, to give our bodies an extra day to recouperate. I literally couldn't lift anything last night and I decided an extra day to let my muscles heal will help my coordination when we go tomorrow.

All of my other shopping is done, too. I got my mom a **** ******. I really hope she like it. Dad's getting a ****** ****, Kevin's getting a *** ****, and I bought Ryan a ********** ******. I've censored the text to keep anyone from figuring out what I actually got. Who knows who will read this, right?

Besides Christmas preparations, I've been stressing about my upcoming trip. It's only two and a half months away now, and we're working hard to get all of the last-minute details irnoned out. I have to give my passport to our program director when classes start again in January so he can get my Chinese entry visa. We also finished choosing roommates for the trip last week. I'll be staying with Sean for the duration of the trip. He used to live in Japan, so it'll be nice to essentially have my own guide the week we're there.

Enjoy the rest of 2006!

Spring Break Plans!

I decided that I want to go to Reno for Spring Break. I'll be getting back from my trip abroad on either Saturday or Sunday and will be flying out to Reno on Tuesday. I know it sounds a bit boring, especially with everyone else in my program touring Nepal, Hong Kong, and the like. But I disagree. I haven't been to any big casino cities in years (not since long before I was old enough to gamble), so I hope I get to see a completely different side of Reno.

I'm also going to be visiting a comedy club while I'm there. Some New York group is touring Reno the week I'll be in town, and I have tickets! I went to a similar club in Portland a while ago (a month or so?) and thought it was incredible. I can only hope this will be similar.

Now, about the trip to China. For my marketing class, we've been studying an apparel company called Icebreaker. Personally, I think the company is great! They specialize in products made from merino wool. This gives their clothing the feel of polyester (rather than prickly wool), but with the warming and drying comfort of real wool. Truly innovative, if you ask me. Unfortunately, it's expensive; but I still want a coat!

Our assignment has been to write a memo to CEO Jeremy Moon about whether or not the time is right for Icebreaker to enter the Chinese market. After reading the case study and supporting material, I think they should move now. The point is, though, that at the end of the case study was a copy of a letter inviting Jeremy Moon to participate in ispo China, a big trade show in Beijing. The interesting thing is that the trade show is taking place during the second half of the week I will be in Beijing! I'm going to try to make a side trip if it's not on our itinerary, if only to shake the hand of the man running a very efficient, innovative, and sustainable company. In case you can't tell from this post, I'm a huge fan and would really like to sit down with someone in the management just to get information on how they did what they did with the company.

Anyway, that's my quickie update for the day. Just over 3 and a half months 'til my trip!

Week 3

So it's the beginning of week 3 and I've already had to sign up for my classes for the new year (term 3 is January-March) AND the field study trip. I'm proud to say that my trip is now official and I'm really looking forward to getting closer to going!

I was told in church on Sunday that parts of China stink. Not as in "not fun" but as in "smell really bad." A former member of my church visits China frequently and relayed his warnings to me via his dad, an Elder in the church. I figure I should take his comment with a grain of salt. It might turn out to be true, but I don't want to taint my mental image of the country before I get the chance to go. I'll give you all some feedback after I go ... we shall see if China really stinks or not. Until then, if you have advice, warnings, comments, or just miscellaneous feedback on my upcoming trip feel free to let me know!

Recent Webpage Updates

Those of you who frequent this site have probably noticed two minor additions on the right-hand side. The first is the inclusion of Google Ads. I subscribed to Adsense as a way to increase the cash in my pocket before I go abroad. If you're a fellow blogger, you might want to look in to the feature. All you do is put the applet on your webpage, and then you get paid depending on how many people visit your site and/or click the advertisements. Google uses software that reads through your posts and targets ads that share at least a small fit with your blog content. To read more, check out their information page.

The next addition is the shameless statement: "I use Google Analytics!" This is not a plug for Google. I use page elements for my blogs, and I needed to specify a name for a second javascript applet I installed. This one tracks the number of people who visit my blogs and where they are reading from. I wanted to have a better idea of who my audience was so I can post appropriately. I also doubt I currently have a high number of readers, but I don't know for sure. Google Analytics will give me a traffic report every day to prove me wrong. If you want they same features on your site, check out their information page.

Countdown ...

Another day, another step closer to the big trip. Today is the day we're supposed to turn in paperwork for airline seat preferences and indicate whether or not we will be returing with the group on schedule. Some people in the program are going to stay in China, some plan to return to Japan, and others want to venture further into Asia by visiting India or Nepal. I think any would be fun, but I want to come home and enjoy a stress-free week here before I hit classes again after Spring Break. I'm trying to decide exactly what I'll do for that week ... so any inexpensive suggestions would be appreciated.

Only four months left to go!

Passport

So I have wonderful news! I received my passport in the mail today. I find it odd that in a country so intent on preventing fraudulent entry by immigrants that a legal document so important as a passport would be mailed to me. Let alone with a copy of my birth certificate. As if unsigned credit cards were a problem, I guarantee someone could have a lot more fun with an unsigned copy of my passport.

Anyway, I am now official. I just need to see what the next step to venturing out into Asia will be. I've heard I might have to send my passport off again to get it stamped or something, but I'll let you know more about that after I hear for sure.

'Til the next update!

Up-and-coming

I created this blog to chronicle my first trip abroad: to Asia!
